Alumni opportunities

Throughout the year, we support artists who have taken part in our UniSlam festival and programmes with various performance and development opportunities.

Current opportunities:

First Story and UniSlam are partnering to offer a small number of voluntary 'shadow writer' positions in secondary schools in which First Story delivers its programmes in Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Lincoln. First Story programmes are delivered by acclaimed professional writers who work weekly with a group of young writers between the ages of 11 and 16. UniSlam Shadow Writers will support the weekly workshops, observing and learning from the practice of an experienced writer-in-residence, working with school students to encourage creative writing effort and participation in the activities. Placements will be of interest to people wishing to build their workshop delivery skills with young people. Successful applicants will undertake DBS clearances and will agree to comply with safeguarding processes.

To register your interest, please respond in writing by Friday 23rd August. Please apply via a written statement to uni_slam@outlook.com, telling us in no more than 500 words:

What interests you about the role? Why do you think it is important to promote creative writing skills and confidence among young people? What do you hope to gain from the experience and how does this tie in your own writing ambition?

Please also tell us whether you would like to take up a placement in Nottingham/ Leicester/ Derby or Lincoln.

The sessions will take place in the weekday afternoons over the autumn and spring terms. Are you confident that you will be able to make this work around your university commitments and that you will be able to organise transport to and from the school?
